Most Popular Content Management Systems

By Chase Keating | December 20, 2021

In this article, we will discuss the most popular Content Management Systems and the pros and cons that come with each. It is important to understand what CMS you are using before deciding on a website template or web design company. There are many different types of content management systems available on the market today, but not all of them can provide your business with everything it needs for success in today's digital marketplace.

Here's a quick overview of the top 5 content management systems (CMS's) and their current market share as of January 1, 2022:

  • WordPress (43%)
  • Joomla! (1.7%)
  • Drupal (1.3%)
  • Webflow (0.4%)
  • Contentful (N/A)
  • Magento

In order to help you decide which one is best for your business, we have compiled a list of their benefits and negatives so that you can make an educated decision about which system to use on your next site!

WordPress

The first CMS on our list is WordPress. This system has been around for quite some time, and it continues to be the most popular choice among everyone from small businesses to large corporations. WordPress currently powers over 40% of the websites on the internet which is a huge deal. With features like built-in search engine optimization (SEO) capabilities, easy blogging tools, mobile responsiveness compatibility, and a huge selection of themes and plugins available to fit your needs, WordPress really provides everything you need in order to create an effective website that will help get customers through your doors!

Some main disadvantages include customization and performance. Compared to a fully custom-built website, you may find yourself limited when it comes to some of WordPress's customization options; if you want any custom functionality you're going to have to create themes/plugins yourself. The other disadvantage is performance, WordPress can sometimes be slow when many plugins are added and the site is receiving a lot of traffic.

When everything is all said and done, WordPress still remains the best option available for most websites online. The website you're reading right now is powered by WordPress!

Joomla!

The second CMS on our list is Joomla!. This open-source content management system has been around since 2005 and continues to provide businesses with what they need in order to create an effective website design that will help them succeed online. Some features include SEO capability, mobile responsiveness compatibility with over 60 percent of all web traffic being generated from mobile devices, and a variety of themes available to fit your business's unique style. However, despite these benefits, this platform also comes with its disadvantages including poor customer support which can make it difficult if you are having issues or questions about how certain aspects operate. Furthermore, Joomla does not have a blogging platform available, which makes it difficult to create content for your site.

Drupal

The third CMS on our list is Drupal. While this open-source system has been around for quite some time, many businesses are still using the old version (Drupal 5) which came out in 2009. However, with an updated version that was released in 2016 comes new benefits and disadvantages alike. Some notable features include SEO capabilities, mobile responsive compatibility across all devices, and over 200 themes you can choose from when designing your website to fit your unique style! On the other hand, though there are several features missing including its ability to handle social media integration properly unless additional plug-ins are installed. Furthermore, it doesn't have much in terms of customization, and most users recommend that you have prior experience before using Drupal as it can become quite advanced.
